Choosing the famililes that receive a home.
Talk about tough. If there were only a few families that needed a home, it wouldn't be such a big deal. The reality though is, that the need for housing in Colonia de San Bernardo is tremendous. When we're in San Bernardo, we'll often have numerous people approach us, asking that we build a home for them. It just breaks our hearts. We try to manage this great need, and our ability to build, in fair and equitable ways.
Families must own the land we'll build on.
For both legal reasons and to help ensure that we're building into the community with a long-term vision, we require that the family own the land that we build on. The Mexican Government provides fairly reasonable terms for purchasing the land.
Families can't own any other property.
We want to ensure that we're building for families that are truly in need. So, we conduct a background check to ensure that they own no other property.
Families must have lived in Colonia de San Bernardo for at least six months.
Part of the vision for Project Mexico is to build into the communities we serve, relationally, not just with homes. We want to ensure that families plan on sticking around, and that they, in turn, will continue to build into the community of San Bernardo.
Families are chosen based on need.
And finally, families are chosen based on need. Unfortunately, the need is far greater than we can currently meet. More groups like ours are beginnig to build in San Bernardo, and we pray that God brings even more to meet the tremendous need for homes and community in this hurting place.
What about all the folks asking for a home?
We take down their contact information, and our local contacts in Mexico, Baja Christian Ministries, interviews the families and conducts the due-diligence on our behalf, to determine if the ffamily qualifies for a home.
