Cost
Housing Materials. Yep, building homes is Mexico costs money. Currently, the cost of building a home is $5,300. The latrine cost $700. These costs include all materials needed to build the home (with the exception of paint). Typically a few additional items will be needed, such as paint brushes, paint buckets, paint rollers and roller handles, and some extra caulking. Unless otherwise noted, each team will build one house and one latrine.
Each team is responsible for raising all monies needed to pay for materials. A $700 deposit is due 6 weeks prior to the trip. Another $2,650 is due 3 weeks prior, and the balance of $2,650 is due 10 days before the trip.
We have found that one very effective way to raise the money needed to pay for materials, is to distribute the responsibility evenly across each team member. With 20 team members, this comes out to $285 per person. We will provide sponsorship forms that aide in fundraising efforts. Email also works great in getting the word out (we've got a good template for you to work with, if you desire). We've found that friends, neighbors, family and co-workers tend to eagerly get behind our efforts to raise money and build these homes. Often, volunteers find themselves raising $500, $800, or even over $1,000 during their fundraising effort.
Tuition. Each volunteer must pay a $65 tuition fee ($55 for 14 and under) which covers 2 night accomodations, some meals and vehicle insurance. Tuition is due 30 days prior to the trip.
Checks for sponsorships and tuition must be made out to Canyon Hills Church (memo: Project Mexico).
